Introduction:

Everyone makes choices about their careers. You can treat it like a "job" and pick up a paycheck at the end of the week, or you can make it your "career" and focus on patient-centered treatment.
I would like to give you the opportunity to become the best hygienist you can be. You will begin by learning to plan patient care that focuses on individual needs.
Assessment: contains all of the patient exam data. This has been completed. You will apply this information to your plan.
Dental Hygiene Diagnosis: the decision-making process in which you determine which factors can be addressed in dental hygiene care.
Plan: prioritizes the patient's needs so that treatment can begin. A step-by-step plan itemizes and sequences the steps for each appointment in a multi-appointment series.
Implement & Evaluate: include activating the plan (care-giving) and feedback on the effectiveness of treatment. (not included in this WebQuest)

Task:

It's Winter break and you're back at Dr. Mitchell's busy office assisting her excellent dental hygienist. She knows that you have learned to plan for patient care. She challenges you to look at one of her new patient's data and plan a treatment for that patient. You are eager, as usual, to make a favorable impression on Dr. Mitchell and her staff (this is the job you are hoping to get after graduation). You must select a patient and plan the dental hygiene services for that patient.

Process:

There are two (2) patients to chose from. Each clinic group (A, B, C) will be subdivided into two (2) groups. The two sub-groups will each plan for a different patient.

Students will work in assigned groups of three (3) and fulfill the roles as described.

Recorder:
Record the patient's treatment plan following the format. Consult with the decision-maker and researcher to complete the forms correctly. This person should have good computer/word-processing skills.
Electronic submission via Course Space :
  1. a dental hygiene diagnosis (problem/etiology/solution)
  2. an itemized treatment plan that reflects the needs and care for the selected patient
  3. a chart to display the factors that influenced the patient's care
Decision Maker:
Assure the all pertinent information is considered in the dental hygiene diagnosis and the plan. Prioritize the needs of the patient based on information given and information you will gather through the links provided (see researcher).
Deliver the dental hygiene diagnosis to the recorder and assist with feedback on the first draft of all submissions.

Researcher:
Read the links associated to the selected patient. Report findings to the decision-maker and discuss the implications for patient. Ask the recorder if additional information is needed and assist with feedback on the first draft of all submissions.

Create a chart to display the factors that influenced the patient's care.

  Products:
The dental hygiene diagnosis should follow the format of 'problem - etiology - solution'. All of the patient's problems should be addressed.
The treatment plan must be complete and reflect the needs of the patient. The plan should not be 'embellished' with information that is not presented in this WebQuest.
The chart must be completed using Excel, following the directions in your dental hygiene manual. You should select the most appropriate chart form for your information.
The treatment plan should be written in a simple, concise form. Follow the proper format for the paper. The details are listed at the site. There is a sample summary at the site also. The summary must be completed using a word processing program (MS Word, Word Perfect, etc.) and submitted electronically (attach to assignment via Course Space).
It's time to begin
